Bejan Singh Eye Hospital Nagercoil · Dedicated eye care for Kanyakumari district since 1992

Specialties

Cornea

The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye. Our Cornea service manages corneal disease, from infections and injuries to corneal transplantation when needed.

Conditions we treat

  • Keratoconus and other forms of corneal thinning
  • Corneal ulcers and infectious keratitis (bacterial, viral, or fungal)
  • Corneal scarring from old infections, injuries, or previous surgery
  • Corneal dystrophies and degenerations
  • Corneal injuries, chemical burns, and foreign-body damage
  • Corneal decompensation or clouding requiring transplantation

Diagnosis & technology

  • Corneal topography and tomography — maps corneal shape, screens for keratoconus
  • Pachymetry — corneal thickness
  • Specular microscopy — examines the corneal endothelium, especially before transplant
  • Slit-lamp biomicroscopy
  • Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM)
  • Anterior segment OCT

Treatment options

  • Medical and contact-lens management of keratoconus, with corneal collagen cross-linking considered to slow progression

  • Corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) — full-thickness or partial-thickness (lamellar), chosen by which layers are affected

  • Targeted treatment of corneal infections and injuries

  • Corneal tear repair

  • Surface reconstruction, including mucous membrane grafting (MMG), SLET, and OSSN excision

  • Contact lenses for keratoconus — see our Contact Lens Clinic

When to seek care

Consult our cornea specialists promptly for blurred or distorted vision, eye pain, redness or discharge, a visible cloudy/white spot on the eye, or a family history of keratoconus with vision changes in your teens or twenties.

Frequently asked questions

What is a corneal transplant, and when is it needed?

It replaces damaged, scarred, or clouded corneal tissue with donor tissue — for advanced keratoconus, scarring, corneal swelling, or failure of a previous transplant.
