Surgery day can feel like the biggest unknown in the process — here's a walk-through of what typically happens, from arrival to going home. Every patient's exact timeline varies a little.
Arrival & check-in
- Arrive at the time given to you — this allows time for final checks before your slot. Confirm registration details, sign any remaining consent forms, and staff verify your fasting status.
In the day ward
- A nurse records your vital signs, may place preparatory eye drops, and helps you change if needed. Let staff know if you're anxious — they can explain each step as it happens.
During the procedure
- Most eye surgeries use local/topical anesthesia — you're awake but the area is numbed, generally no pain, maybe pressure or light sensations. Often shorter than patients expect. Your team talks you through it.
Right after surgery
- A period of rest and observation in a recovery area before discharge. A nurse reviews your eye-drop schedule, activity restrictions, and follow-up appointment before you leave.
