The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface at the front of the eye, responsible for most of its focusing power. Our Cornea & Refractive Surgery service brings together refractive surgery — reducing dependence on spectacles for short sight, long sight, and astigmatism — and corneal disease management, from infections and injuries to corneal transplantation when needed.

Conditions we treat

  • Refractive errors — myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism
  • Keratoconus and other forms of corneal thinning
  • Corneal ulcers and infectious keratitis (bacterial, viral, or fungal)
  • Corneal scarring from old infections, injuries, or previous surgery
  • Corneal dystrophies and degenerations
  • Corneal injuries, chemical burns, and foreign-body damage
  • Corneal decompensation or clouding requiring transplantation

Diagnosis & technology

  • Corneal topography and tomography — maps corneal shape, screens for keratoconus, plans refractive surgery
  • Pachymetry — corneal thickness, a key safety check before LASIK/PRK
  • Specular microscopy — examines the corneal endothelium, especially before transplant
  • Slit-lamp biomicroscopy and detailed refraction
  • Tear film assessment before refractive surgery

Treatment options

  • Needs hospital confirmation: LASIK / PRK (surface ablation) — BSEH's earlier site named a specific branded laser platform ("Zyoptix 100," a mid-2000s wavefront LASIK system); we've deliberately written this page in technology-neutral terms and need the hospital to confirm the current excimer/femtosecond laser and topography-guided systems in use
  • Medical and contact-lens management of keratoconus, with corneal collagen cross-linking considered to slow progression

  • Corneal transplantation (keratoplasty) — full-thickness or partial-thickness (lamellar), chosen by which layers are affected

  • Targeted treatment of corneal infections and injuries

  • Needs hospital confirmation: Eye donation / corneal retrieval program — historical claims about the retrieval team's reach and timing should be verified as still current (see Eye Bank page)

When to seek care

Consult our cornea specialists promptly for blurred or distorted vision, frequent prescription changes, increasing light sensitivity or glare, eye pain, redness or discharge, a visible cloudy/white spot on the eye, or a family history of keratoconus with vision changes in your teens or twenties.

Frequently asked questions

Who is a good candidate for LASIK?

Generally adults 18+, with spectacle power stable for at least a year, healthy eyes, adequate corneal thickness, and no active corneal disease or severe dry eye. A detailed exam confirms suitability.

Is LASIK safe?

LASIK has decades of worldwide use and a low rate of serious complications when patients are properly screened — a thorough pre-op evaluation and honest discussion of expectations matter.

What is a corneal transplant, and when is it needed?

It replaces damaged, scarred, or clouded corneal tissue with donor tissue — for advanced keratoconus, scarring, corneal swelling, or failure of a previous transplant.

Is LASIK the same as PRK?

Both use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea, but LASIK creates a thin flap first, while PRK reshapes the surface directly. Your surgeon recommends one based on corneal thickness and lifestyle.
